About Urban Camping

When the weather permits, some homeless youth have found urban camping (camping within the city limits) to be a temporary living solution. They stay close to urban amenities while living a campground lifestyle. Some say that leaving the noise and constant hassle of the city provides relief, and the space needed to think about a long-term housing solution.

Tips for Safe Urban Camping in the Twin Cities

  • For any area you might camp, consider the local population, crime rate, weather, ordinances, and patrols. Be aware of your surroundings. Find a secluded area away from everyday traffic.
  • Try not to camp alone. It is safer to have more people around, but you should limit the size of your camp to two or three people.
  • Don’t leave things in disarray. Clean up after you leave and keep the volume low. If you’re respectful, local people will have a better image of you staying there. You’ll want to take your things with you when you leave during the day anyway, to prevent theft or police confiscation.
  • Once you settle in and create a camp, it’s a good idea to start planning your next camping spot, because there may be reason to leave at any time.
  • If you must build a fire, remember to keep it small. Dig a hole, surround it with rocks, and remember to never leave your fire unattended.
  • Contact a StreetWorks outreach worker if you need camping resources. We can assist you with ponchos, tents and other necessities.
